UPDATED: Canceling My XBox Live Gold Membership
It came time to cancel my Xbox 360 Live Gold Membership tonight. I have no problems with the service or the cost of it, but I just don’t use it. I haven’t played my Xbox 360 in months much less logged on to play someone else.
So, I log into my game console and look around for the cancel button. I went through every screen on the account management tab but nothing. I couldn’t find it anywhere. Me being a naive Internet user ( 16 years and counting) I assumed Microsoft would make canceling the service as easy as it was to start. I mean it took me 2 minutes and a credit card to start my account right on my Xbox 360. Why should canceling be so hard? We know why they make it so hard, but damnit I am ranting here.
So anyway, I hit Google with “how do i cancel my xbox live subscription” and about the second one down was the number I had to call to cancel my membership. So I dialed it up and after 4 Indians, 3 Holds, and 2 reference numbers I finally got it canceled. If I gave out a weekly you suck ass award, Microsoft would get this weeks.

Yes, this is a real pain in the ass. They will let you manage everything in your account, except cancelling it. They will let you add a payment option but not delete a payment option.
I really don’t understand why I have to waste my time calling a person and going through a bunch of hoops just to cancel Live. Clearly, they can add this option into your account but they don’t want to. They would rather waste my time asking again and again, I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you are saying to some person from another Country.
The lady I talked with had very poor English skills and kept cutting me off. I asked to talk with her boss and she stated that she did not have a boss. I asked her if she was in the United States and she stated that she could not give out that information due to security.
Please…give me a break. Mr. Bill Gates and Microsoft can go suck it.
Yea, I gotta make a new post about this soon. After all that I noticed they billed me in May. I am gonna call India back up and hoist the Jolly Roger.
I’m canceling my gold as well, I got an email saying my credit card will get charged for automatic renewal. One problem, I don’t use it anymore.
Last winter I got into PC, built a custom gaming rig and since then my 360 sat there. I’m selling it to my brother since he is the only one who plays it.
I don’t like the concept of talking to someone hard to understand, and the hours on the phone. Any other way to cancel it or change the payment options?
That is the only way I have found to cancel it. I spent a good 30 minutes going through every screen on my Xbox 360 and couldn’t find a place to cancel.
You can spend more money there just not cancel.
if we compared microsoft service to sony…its not comparable…i call microsoft to cancel acount…they give me a lot of reference number…..and they told me that they will recall me in 5 days, and i never received an answer. I call sony to compare service, and they HAVE TRANSLATOR PEOPLE :O! Its amasing.
Yeah, this is a silly attempt to make it hard to NOT spend your money there. As a result I won’t sign back up. I’m more than happy to sign on and off all my other subscription based games. I can start and stop those on a whim and it makes it very appealing to return and use them again.
MS is just grubbing for more money and hoping you don’t cancel because it’s a pain.
Oh and get this: You LOSE the time remaining if you cancel early (see: penalty for cancelling early vs. chance to wait too long and pay for another month)
You LOSE your gamer tag and ranks (see: we don’t want you to stop paying so we’ll penalize you if you do)
You CANNOT subscribe via a gamecard without a credit card (see: We can’t simply start billing your credit card after your game card expires and you’ve forgotten about it)
You could always “lose” your credit card, and be issued a new number… that is, if you don’t have other recurring transactions on your account.
If I cancel my Xbox live silver subscription, will it change my profile back to an offline profile? I normally do not play online, since I do not have internet connection available. I noticed that everytime I login in, it gives me the error that it cannot connect to Xbox Live. I find this very annoying and would like to revert back to an offline profile.
You can cancel the auto renew of the Xbox live gold if you go to xbox.com and login to your live account, click you gamertag, click contact information, click membership level, and where it says automatic renewel, click where it says on. You will then have to click through a few screens where they are trying to keep you but then you will finally be able to set it to off!!!
And what do we do if we have a silver membership? There is no ‘renewal’ button on the screen!
Ya know how you can go on the website and go on membership level to click ON to OFF? well they have removed that too and i can’t find an option which will revert me back to silver. i’m really angry with MS right now i’m never going to get live again.
Trying to cancel my membership now…This is the worst customer service ever!
I tried logging into my account online and I can’t cancel my membership. I don’t really feel like calling tech support and wasting an hour. I’ll just dispute with MasterCard when they charge me in a couple of days.
